Whether its cell phones, digital cameras, DVDs, giant buildings, massive bridges or facial recognition devices, engineers are behind today’s innovative technology; designing, manufacturing and building products society depends on every day.


Welcome to Banneker High School. You are entering a course of study designed to help you understand how engineers design products, use technology to control machines and interact with people to make products work. The field of engineering is as diverse as the multitude of products we are surrounded by and use to live and work. We will be exploring many of the basic tasks performed by engineers to make things work. There is much to learn and much to do. Welcome to the journey, and I trust it will be an enjoyable and enriching experience for you.


This class is held in a unique classroom and taught in many unique ways. Although there will be times in the formal classroom, much time will be spent in the lab interacting with the tools and equipment of technology. There are many expensive, delicate and potentially dangerous pieces of equipment in the lab areas. You are expected to handle yourself in a safe and responsible manner and to help do your part in respecting the equipment by using it safely and properly.


BannekerHigh School is a great place to learn with many interesting activities to explore. We provide a lot for you and expect a lot from you. Be on time, stay on task, work hard and you will become the success you are capable of being.


Course Description:  Foundations of Engineering and Technology is the introductory course for all Georgia Engineering and Technology Education pathways. This course provides students with opportunities to develop fundamental technological literacy as they learn about the history, systems, and processes of invention and innovation.


Course Overview:   Foundations of Engineering and Technology is the introductory engineering course at BannekerHigh School. Students apply skills learned in math, science, physics, communication arts, and social studies classes to real world problems. There are no academic prerequisites for level I.


Students will learn some basics of Research and Development (R&D) as they relate to product development and engineering. An introduction to Civil Engineering is provided. Students will learn many aspects of technology through various engineering trainer learning activities. Our lab has been equipped with state-of-the-art engineering trainers used to train engineers in major companies such as General Motors, Ford, Caterpillar and Georgia Pacific.


Class will consist of whole group learning activities, small group, paired and individual activities revolving around Engineering and Technology subjects and projects. Trainer Learning Activities, Corporate Organization with Master Project design and fabrication activities will put to use engineering skills learned.

Georgia Performance Standards:     

            This course will be in compliance with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS).  The following Georgia Performance Standards will be covered this year.  A detailed description of each Standard may be read on the Georgia Department of Education website: (Choose the “High School – Phase I” link, scroll down to the “Program Concentration: Engineering & Technology” section, then choose the name of the course link.)


Georgia State Career Pathways Standards Foundations of Engineering and Technology


ENGR-FET1 (5 weeks – Students will describe the career pathways that are encompassed by Georgia Engineering and Technology Education.

ENGR-FET2 (5 weeks) – Students will describe the history of technological advancement.

ENGR-FET3 (5 weeks) – Students will explain the universal systems model.

ENGR-FET4 (5 weeks) – Students will apply mathematics and science to the solution of a technological problem.

ENGR-FET5 (5 weeks) – Students will describe the essential systems and processes involved with invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

ENGR-FET6 (5 weeks) – Students will use visual and verbal communication to express basic design   .


Materials & Textbooks: Students may need to obtain some additional materials. Students are required to bring their own writing materials (pen/pencil and paper) to class every day.

The course textbook is Engineering Your Future by Gomez; replacement cost is $68.50.




 Active Clubs and Organizations:

 Technology Student Association (TSA)

 Non-profit national student organization devoted to teaching technology education to young people. Includes conferences, resources and publications,

  Provides leadership and opportunities in technology, innovation, design and engineering. Members apply STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts through co-curricular programs.




Class Rules and Expectations:

Much of what we do in this class will emulate the real world engineering environment. This is designed to help prepare you to be a more productive, trusted and valuable employee. Participation and a good attitude is expected!  Independence and on task behavior is expected. Teamwork and group cooperation is a necessity.

The teacher will review specific laboratory procedures with all students, and each one will sign a statement of understanding.  Trust will be an important factor. Failure to act responsibly can result in class failure and possible expulsion from the lab.




  1. Seating Area (lecture room) – Enter lecture room every day. Every class begins & ends here.  Seats are assigned.  Show respect by giving your undivided attention to the presentation.
  2. Attendance – Attendance is taken each period from the seating chart as soon as the bell rings.
  3. Tardiness – You are tardy if not in the classroom when the bell rings. You will sign the tardy sheet and be seated. After (3) tardies, a disciplinary referral will be initiated.
  4. Announcements – Immediately stop all conversation.  Listen until the announcements are completed.
  5. On Task – Keep movement & noise to a minimum.  Remain at your workstation unless there is a legitimate reason to be elsewhere. 
  6. Computers – We will cover specifics on computers later when we begin using them. Access to the internet is not allowed unless permission is given by the teacher for a specific purpose.
  7. Misuse/Abuse – The equipment in this lab is state and school system property.  Any misuse or abuse of this equipment will result in serious consequences implemented by the administration.
  8. Food & Drink – They are not allowed in the classroom or lab. 
  9. Portable electronic devices – CD players, Mp3 players, cell phones, video games or any such electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom or labs. If brought to class they will be taken away. 
  10. Restrooms – The schedule provides a break between every class. This is the time for you to use the restroom facilities.               
  11. Materials & Tools- Return materials and equipment to proper location so others may find them. 
  12. Safety – Everyone is responsible for safety in the lab. Fooling around is not allowed! Always follow safety procedures.  Safety glasses will be worn for some activities. They will be provided.
  13. Materials Processing Lab – NEVER operate machinery without the teacher’s permission and only in the teacher’s presence. Safety glasses must be worn while in the materials processing lab. Never walk away from an operating piece of equipment. Make sure after operation, the switch is in the off position.
  14. Cleanup – When the cleanup whistle blows stop work immediately. Quickly cleanup put things away and help clean the rest of the lab. 
  15. Dismissal – After cleaning up, when the second whistle blows, return to your assigned seat in the classroom seating area and wait for the teacher to dismiss you. 


NOTE:  This list does not address every situation that could come up in this class.  The teacher is the ultimate authority. Any questions should be directed to the teacher.  You are expected to exhibit mature, responsible, adult behavior in this laboratory.


Evaluation: Grades will be based on written assignments, quizzes, tests, lab reports, products, class participation and portfolio presentations. A point system is used and points are accumulated throughout the semester. The final grade will be based on the percent of total points obtained.

Grades: A=100-90%   B=89-80%   C=79-70%   F=Below 70%. Late work is not accepted unless previous arrangements are made prior to the due date.

End of Pathway Assessments :


The Georgia Department of Education has made available two assessments to ascertain the competence of our career technology students.  The assessments are Work-Ready and End-of-Pathway.  The Work-Ready assessment measures the skills of Georgia’s workers, determines valuable job training opportunities, and assures companies that the state can provide a long-term, qualified labor supply, and is a requirement for some Georgia jobs. The End-of-Pathway assessment measures the level of technical skill attainment of each career pathway completer.  The Work-Ready assessment will be administered to all work-based learning students and all seniors currently enrolled in a CTE course.  The End-of-Pathway assessments will be administered to all CTE students who have finished or are finishing a pathway.  Tests will be administered in October and April.

Recovery Policy: Provision for Improving Grades


  1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low        or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to        date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate        effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Students        should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities.  Teachers are expected to establish a        reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the        semester.  All recovery work must        be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten        school days prior to the end of the semester.

  3. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating        circumstances may improve grades.

  5.  Students  who are in need of tutoring can meet        with the teacher on a weekly basis to get extra help: (Thursdays afternoon        from 4 to 5pm)






  1. Students will be        given 5 days from their EXCUSED absence to        make up missed assignments, quizzes or tests.  Any work not made up will become a        zero.  (Class time WILL NOT be        used to make up work).



  1. Full credit will be        given only to students with an excused absence.  The following constitute an excused        absence:

Personal Illness                                   Death   in the Family

Serious Illness in the Family               Religious Holiday



  1. An excused absence is        not personal reasons or going to work.         These are UNEXCUSED and can be made up, but will        not receive full credit.  Example:  My son/daughter had to take care of        very personal business.



  1. Any student with an        excused absence must have a note from a parent/guardian, with a phone        number, or email address along with the BANNEKER CLASS ADMITTANCE        FORM from the main office.



  1. Last Day for makeup        work for Fall Semester 2013 is December 16, 2013        and for Spring Semester 2014 is May 7, 2014        missed assignments or tests from the beginning of the semester must be        made up within the time stated in Number one (1).  This date is non-negotiable.






  1. Check        the Make-up  Assignment Folders        when you return .















Academic Integrity:  Cheating and academic fraud will not be tolerated.  Banneker considers academic misconduct to be any act that can give unfair academic advantage to a student, his grades, or his records. Such acts include lying, stealing, and cheating. Cheating is any dishonesty, written or verbal.  This includes any sabotage, falsification, or involvement in giving or receiving unauthorized help.  This dishonesty includes, but is not limited to the following:  Academic Fraud (“recycling” work, taking credit for another’s work), Plagiarism (cut and paste, Cliffs/Sparks Notes or other guides) and Electronic Cheating (text messaging, using electronic devices or calculators without permission).  Cheating and Academic Fraud will result in a ZERO on the assignment.



Parental Signature: It is important that parents understand what is taking place in your Engineering program. Obtain your parent’s signature and return this portion. The Syllabus goes into your notebook.                            08
